It was a small field of five pairs that contested last night's event but it went down to the wire. With 19 of the 20 boards played the scorer had two pairs tied. Shirley Tavares & Audley Astwood were locked up with Herbie Gauntlett & Calvin Wong with both on a 63% game. The players were gathered around the final table in play after Tavares & Astwood sitting E-W had made 3D on board 20 for 110 against Gauntlett & Wong. A vulnerable N-S was playing 3S at that final table in play. It would need to be defeated by two tricks to give the Gauntlett - Wong pair a victory. It went down one for 100 points to the E-W pair and an overall victory for Tavares & Astwood with a 65% game. Second was Gauntlett & Wong while third was Monica Cools-Lartigue and a Halloween costumed and masked Marlene Fulford (at least we think it was her!).

Congratulations to overall winners Rosie Mahfood & Ulla Dahl who tied for fifth, thirteen points behind the leaders on Day 1, then took the second place last night to take home the trophy. Although faring badly last night, two pairs that had a big lead on Day 1, Wayne Chai Chong & Karl Lee plus Valerie Marshall & Walter Brown, were able to do just enough to hang onto second and third spots respectively in the overall standings.

Hubert White & Michiko Asonuma had a bad first day (3rd from last on Day 1) but topped day 2 while Day 1 winners were Valerie Marshall & Walter Brown.

Manchester Cup - Final - Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Shown here is the team of (L-R) Carol Coore, Audley Astwood, Ulla Dahl and Elizabeth 'Betty' Williams that inflicted a 104-41 international match point (imp) drubbing on the Marlene Fulford, Monica Cools-Lartigue, Peter Mais and Richard Phillips quartet in the 32 board final played at Philipps' Cherry Gardens residence. There was a 4 imp carry-over for the winners who took the first session 40-4 and the second by 60-37. Coore and Williams made the finals last year but their team which also won the preliminaries then, finished as the runner-up in that championship match.

N.B. - In the Jamaica Bridge Blog's 'Player of the Month' ranking, players are awarded points for each game (session) played inclusive of the audited results of 'Last Saturday' games. Each player of the winning pair gets points equal to the number of pairs entered and each following pair gets 1 point less. E.g., if 7 pairs play, pair 1 gets 7 points (each player), pair 2 gets 6, pair 3 gets 5, ..... pair 7 gets 1. Additionally, 3 bonus points are awarded to the winner of each session, 2 to second place and 1 to third. (In the case of a tie the points for the spots are totalled and then divided between the tied players.)
